The 45-Day Hunger Games

In the cartoon, a giant ornate hourglass labeled “LPG REFILL” dominates a dusty rural landscape. The top bulb is heaped with shiny LPG cylinders, stamped with big numbers “0–25–45 DAYS” like level markers in a mobile game. The sand is actually rupee coins and tiny food grains, trickling down painfully slowly. At the very bottom, cramped into the lower bulb, a rural family sits on the floor of a mud-brick hut: a woman trying to cook over a makeshift wood-and-dung fire, a kid coughing in a cloud of black smoke, an old man holding an empty LPG hose like an IV drip. Outside the glass, a gleaming urban apartment balcony—with potted plants and a ring light—has a posh couple taking a cheerful selfie next to a full gas cylinder with a little banner: “REFILL UNLOCKED IN 25 DAYS! #TemporaryMeasure.” On the side of the hourglass, Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi, wearing a crisp kurta and a ‘POLICY BALANCING ACT’ sash, is literally blowtorching the narrow middle of the hourglass to keep the grains from flowing. A tiny official placard at his feet reads: “45-DAY BOOKING WINDOW – TEMPORARY DEMAND MANAGEMENT.” Behind him, a smug bureaucrat from the Oil Ministry is pointing to a slick “West Asia Crisis” PowerPoint slide, but the slide clearly shows a big green arrow labeled “SUPPLY EASED.” In the sky, a government drone banner flies past, reading: “ACHHE DIN: LPG SUPPLY EASED!” while black smoke from the hut below curls up and literally erases the word “EASED,” leaving just: “LPG SUPPLY.”
